Just as in Central America, ceramic ocarinas were important components of the musical traditions of pre-Columbian South America. Beautifully crafted ocarinas are known from archaeological sites in the highland and costal regions of Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. Many are colorfully painted as well as molded into stylized animal and human forms.
