The Making of a Replica

 

When the Uncovering Pacific Pasts exhibition opened in 2020, a beautiful siapo—tapa or painted bark cloth from Samoa—was placed on display. As of May 2025, there is a replica in its place. What is a replica and why isn’t the original on display anymore?

Take a look behind the scenes of the Peabody Museum to learn about how curatorial, conservation, and exhibition staff all work together to preserve and make collections accessible to the public.

Have you ever noticed your brightly colored curtains are now a dull washed-out tone on one side after years of being exposed to sunlight? Or that the elastic on your 10-year-old sweatpants has lost its stretch? Some materials deteriorate or change over time, due to a variety of environmental factors and human activity. Understanding those processes—and addressing them—is a large part of what a museum conservator does.

What is tapa?

Tapa is a generic term used in the Pacific region to refer to cloth made from the inner bark of trees like the paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera). The cloth is known by many names across the region—siapo in Sāmoa, ngatu in Tonga, masi in Fiji, hiapo in Niue, ‘ahu in Tahiti, and kapa in Hawai‘i. Tapa is produced and used for many purposes—for clothing, mats, masks and sculptural figures, bedding, wrapping, as well as trade and gifting.

Tapa is painstakingly created from inner tree bark, stripped and beaten repeatedly with grooved wooden mallets, dried in the sun, and decorated with natural earth pigments. In some communities, stencils and stamps create intricate geometric patterns full of symbolic motifs. Others are painted freehand to capture and depict stories and historic moments. Tapa making remains a vibrant creative practice in the Pacific Islands, whether produced in historic styles and methods or crafted into contemporary fashions with sewing machines. 

Why was this tapa cloth reproduced?

Most items in museums were not made with the intention of being under bright lights and indoor climate conditions. As part of the exhibition planning process, conservators determine safe light levels for displaying cultural heritage. The decision on how long an item should be exhibited is based on the light levels, the item's condition, and how sensitive the materials are. Some cultural materials deteriorate over time and are light sensitive, chemically unstable, or structurally vulnerable. For this reason, curators and conservators select alternative or similar items to limit exposure to environmental conditions. In this case, this tapa is one of a kind and there was no other item that could tell the same story in the exhibition. Since the tapa and its pigments are fragile and sensitive to light, the conservation team needed to find a creative long-term solution. They decided that a reproduction could be made and the original tapa could return to storage.

Conservation, curatorial, and the exhibition teams worked closely to determine the appropriate materials and methods for producing a realistic replica.

     What kind of fabric or paper would look the most like bark cloth?

     Which type of ink would the printer need to use? 

     How would these new materials impact the other items on display?

Conservator Judy Jungels tested materials that would be used in the reproduction and the exhibition team consulted with vendors to obtain samples for testing.

Selecting materials for reproduction

When museums exhibit cultural heritage, the environment inside the exhibition case is controlled to limit deterioration of the objects on display. This means creating a temperature and humidity that is stable and suitable for preservation, monitoring light levels, and avoiding adding any materials that release of "off-gas" harmful chemicals such as organic acids, sulfur compounds, or chlorides. 

Have you ever unwrapped a new carpet or plastic bathmat and noticed it has a smell? Maybe you "aired it out" or put it outside for a day until the smell dissipated. That is a product of off-gassing. If those chemicals are trapped inside a case, they may interact with other items nearby, causing them potential harm. For example, some wood products used in the construction of a new exhibit case can off-gas formic acid, causing any items nearby that contain copper alloy to corrode. This is one of the reasons the museum carefully chooses materials that we use around museum collections. You can also see this in everyday items such as pennies. They can have a variety of colors of corrosion from brown to blue or green, depending on environmental factors they are exposed to.

When creating a reproduction for display, the museum chooses archival materials that are designed to last and that do not emit harmful chemicals. For many years, conservators have relied on the Oddy test to check the safety of their materials. This test was developed in 1973 by Conservation Scientist Andrew Oddy at the British Museum to test exhibition materials' safety around museum items.

For this exhibition, there are several items on display in the same case as the tapa. They are made from materials ranging from wood, photographs, fiber cordage, books, and archival paper. Therefore, the materials used to create the reproduction had to be carefully considered. 

Creating the reproduction

First, the team needed a high quality, high-definition digital image for the printer. Conservators treated the tapahumidifying and pressing it over weeksso that it would lay flat. Then the Peabody Museum’s Publication Imaging Registrar worked with a professional museum photographer to capture the image. Photographing the large tapa cloth in its entirety was very difficult due to its size and reflective quality. While this tapa is only 6 by 4 ½ feet (many are over 60 feet long!), the photo required a special rigging set-up to get the whole cloth in a single image. A wooden frame was built to hold and center the camera, while circular panels of light absorbing fabric were strategically placed to diffuse the distinctive shine of the tapa's black candlenut tree pigment. 

With appropriate materials selected and a digital image to work from, the exhibition team had the replica printed professionally on linen/cotton cloth with stable pigment-based inks. The curatorial and exhibits teams reviewed the test prints to make sure the reproduction could accurately represent the original.  

Have you ever scanned a photograph and printed out a copy on photo paper, but were disappointed that the colors off? Different inks, papers, saturation levels, as well as computer and printer settings can all impact what the copy looks like.

The printed cloth was an excellent start, but it could not be installed as is. The color and texture were off. A flat printed image could never exactly match the color tone and texture of the tapa, and additional adjustments were needed to resemble the original more closely. 

The final touches

Harvard Museums of Science and Culture’s talented Exhibit Production Specialist Amanda Kressler experimented with a second copy of the printed reproduction cloth to find materials and techniques that could mimic the original's color and texture (detail, below left). Conservation consulted with Amanda to ensure any paints or added substances would be safe for all the items in the shared display case.

The team decided that acrylic paint would be the best option to adjust the tone. Where other dyeing agents like black tea could have given it the desired aged effect, these agents can be acidic and change the pH in the case, leading to irreversible damage like metal corrosion or the deterioration of paper fibers. Acrylic paint is often used in conservation for retouching as it has been tested for light fastness and stability and is safe to use in an environment with museum objects.

Amanda compared the original tapa with the digital print while doing an extensive color study with a variety of acrylic-based paints, tints, and glosses. It was a long tedious process, using mainly burnt umber and black acrylic paint to create a custom color for staining. She submerged the fabric print into a dye bath of the paint and warm water and soaked test strips cut form the extra print for different lengths of time until the desired color was achieved. Stirring and squeeze-drying the fabric repeatedly by hand helped to give it the natural wrinkles that mimic the organic texture of the bark cloth resulting in a beautiful replica currently seen on display!
