Abstract

The volume identifies, dates, and interprets pieces in the Peabody’s “Lewis and Clark collection.” These magnificent 18th and early 19th century Native American objects are analyzed in detail and traced through documentation to their probable sources, both tribal makers and users and likely collectors. In interactions characterized by diplomacy, gift exchange, and mutual discovery, the expedition members acquired everything from painted and quilled buffalo robes to waterproof basketry hats and elaborate ceremonial smoking pipes.
