Tonina (Page 3)
Monument 101
Location
Found in 1972 by the French Archaeological Mission. The first fragment to appear lay under a thin layer of rubble near the southeast corner of Structure E5-10; it carried the head of the personage and part of the headdress. The lower portion, down to and including the belt, was found in the extreme west of the site, where it had been abandoned by thieves. Later, the top portion of the headdress was found on the slope between the fourth and fifth terraces. Now in the site museum.
Condition
Broken into three large fragments and one small. The portion below the belt is missing, and the figure's left upper arm is damaged, as are his hands and nose. The front is somewhat weathered, but in general the sculpture is in excellent condition.
Material
Yellow sandstone.
Shape
A standing human figure in stela form. The sides are well dressed and nearly parallel, with narrower top. The back is flat.

Monument 106
Location
Found in 1973 by the French Archaeological Mission during clearance of rubble from the front, or west face, of Structure E5-5. The fragments lay close to a niche on the right (south side) of the stair. Now in the site museum.
Condition
The lower part of the panel, constituting perhaps nearly half of the original, was broken into many fragments, few of which proved to be missing when it was reconstructed by Graham. Two smaller areas of the sculpture were found, both of them broken into smaller pieces and now mended, one including the figure's face, the other forming the upper right corner. There are also two other small fragments. The carved surface is in pristine condition.
Material
Fine-grained white limestone.
Shape
A nearly rectangular panel with well-dressed sides and back.
Carved Areas
Front only.

Drawing

Remarks
Fragment 33 was also found near Structure E5-5, but it will be illustrated separately since it may have come from a similar panel installed in a niche on the other side of the stairway. Other fragments similar in material and style, but as yet unnumbered, are in the site's storeroom.

Monument 125
Location
Discovered in 1979 by the French Archaeological Mission. It lay in debris on the fourth terrace in front of Structure E5-5. Baudez (in Becquelin and Taladoire 1990, p. 1704) has commented on the possibility that this and Monument 27 were set in association.
Condition
The piece is intact, but some areas of carved surface have been lost by spalling, others affected by erosion, while yet others remain well preserved. A thin plaster coating remains in places.

Monument 126
Location
Found on top of the stucture on the southward extension of the second terrace, at its eastern end. The headdress mask was previously inventoried as Fragment 4. Now preserved in the Tonina site museum.
Condition
Broken into thirteen fitting fragments and a small isolated one. The carved surface is considerably eroded. A considerable area is missing from the upper left corner. Some of the carved surface has separated from the body. Erosion varies from severe to moderate. Since Baudez first published this piece in Becquelin and Taladoire (1990, fig. 130a), a fragment connecting the upper left-hand corner to the main body of the panel seems to have been lost, as shown in the photograph published here.

Location
Of the three fitting fragments found by the French Archaeological Mission, one was found in 1974 east of Structure E5-17; this was published as Fragment 85 (Becquelin and Baudez 1982, part 2, p. 853). Another was found in 1978 on the second terrace, and a third in 1979 on the third terrace. Now cemented together, these are in the Tonina site museum.

Location
This panel has been assembled on paper from three items catalogued initially by the MAF as Fragments 8, 37, and 96. But because Peter Mathews identified them later as fitting fragments of a single sculpture, they are hereby assigned an unused monument number (see Becquelin and Taladoire 1990, p. 1689). Fragments 8 and 37 (the left- and right-hand fragments) were found among rubble on Structure E5-8, and Fragment 96 (the large, central element) was found on the same terrace between Structures E5-17 and E5-18.
